Tobago Students flock to tt Film Festival

Tobago’s senior school teachers have been lauded for allowing their students to experience the recent 12th annual trinidad + tobago film festival in person.

Bishop’s High School, always a major supporter of the festival, along with Roxborough, Speyside and Pentecostal Light and Life High Schools packed out the theatre at MovieTowne, Lowlands, to see The Tempest.

Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive also filled the theatre as Garnet Lawrence took 156 students with teachers to see Centerstitch, directed by Celoi Carr, a student. Filmed at the school, it told of a young boy obsessed with his shoes. The film explored the link between fashion, media and school behaviour and looked at some of the issues plaguing the local school system—bullying, unprotected sex, drug use and gambling.

Redemption the key in The Violin Teacher

The 12th Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival runs until September 26 on two screens in MovieTowne Port of Spain, one in San Fernando, another in Tobago and at the UWI.

Film writer, BC Pires, will be picking a Film of the Day, every day. Pires sat on the first TT Film Fest Jury, wrote the Judge’s Report and has been the Youth Jury’s mentor since its inception in 2014. A different film will be picked every day, and other worthwhile films mentioned.

Because of the limitations of programming schedules, the film of the day may not necessarily be the “best” one.

The first “film of the day” pick is a bit of a cheat: with three very strong contenders being denied an individual daily pick through the impossibility of scheduling everything good on its own day, rather than leaving one out, here is a trinity of choice for a T&T Film Festival; any one of them could “take win”

Moko Jumbie Film Offers Romance in a Cedros Full of Mystery

Vashti Anderson’s feature film Moko Jumbie will make its Trinidad premiere on September 23 at MovieTowne in a special appearance at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. It is a film that is already creating an international buzz. The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June where it got strong reviews and was screened last month for the opening night at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Canada and won the award for Best Screenplay.

Earlier this month it played for a very appreciative, large crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and soon will be at the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York. It will be the opening night film at the Third Horizon Film Festival in Miami later this month.

Free Tickets for Green Days Movie

UWI medical student Nadia Kandhai never set out to be a movie star. However, a random meeting on a flight to Tobago set her on the path to play Rosalie, the female lead in Green Days by the River movie, that will be screened at the gala opening of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival (ttff) next weekend.
“I’m a third-year medical school student,” said Khandhai as she reflects on how she ended up playing the lead female character.

“I met Christian (James) on a flight to Tobago. He told me I looked like what he imagined Rosalie would look like, I auditioned and here I am,” said Khadhai in a media release.

She is one of just under 100 local actors that bring Michael Anthony’s beloved novel Green Days by the River to the big screen nationwide on September 27.
