The price of love: Cheddi Jagan

The price of love: Cheddi Jagan

Born on a sugar plantation in rural Guyana to indentured Indian laborers, Cheddi Jagan rose from humble beginnings to become the Western Hemisphere’s first democratically elected Marxist leader. After studying dentistry in the USA, where he met his wife Janet, he returned to British Guiana with a revolutionary vision of justice and equality. In 1953, his People’s Progressive Party won a historic election, only to be suspended by Britain after 133 days – sparking decades of struggle against imperial interference, CIA plots, and racial divisions. Through intimate interviews, the film reveals the personal cost of his dedication: from the Cold War machinations that repeatedly thwarted his democratic mandate to the bitter racial violence that tore his nation apart, Jagan’s story resonates as that of a visionary who sacrificed everything for his people’s freedom.
