Film Details

For centuries, Suriname’s Maroons have preserved ancestral traditions and resisted capitalist encroachment. But climate change and gold mining now threaten their way of life. Monikondee (Money Land) follows Boogie, a boatman delivering vital goods to Maroon and Indigenous communities along the river border between Suriname and French Guiana. As the demands of his money-driven work grow, they begin to conflict with his traditional obligations. The film unfolds through a collaborative, immersive lens, blending participatory cinema with mato—a Maroon storytelling tradition where audiences help shape the tale. Through collective narration, Monikondee explores community, tradition, and the pull of economic survival.
