Coastal and rural workers are being squeezed out of the futures they’ve sustained for generations. This programme invites a reckoning: not with loss, but with the systems making survival impossible.
Filmed in 16mm, ‘Trinitario – on the edge’ follows the stories of four cocoa farmers across Trinidad who share their unique perspectives about the past, present, and future of cocoa farming on the island. The film explores what it means to be a farmer, and the ways in which challenges faced by farmers across the region can be overcome by combining generational wisdom and living in harmony with the surroundings.

Paramin, a village in Trinidad’s Northern Range, has long relied on agricultural farming. Climate and economic imperatives are pushing farmers toward using sprinklers and agrochemicals, though not all agree. Veteran gardener Peter “Peko,” who has been farming for over 40 years, maintains traditional methods, sharing his routines with wisdom and concern about the present times.

‘Farmers of the sea’ reveals the ancestral practice of pot-fishing in Vieques, Puerto Rico, now under threat from climate change and declining fish populations. Following artisanal fishermen like Pedro and Cecilia, the film captures their daily struggles as they navigate new challenges in pursuit of their catch. Despite the hardships, younger generations aspire to continue this tradition and honour the legacy of their fishermen ancestors.
