Soon Come Back

Genre: Expressions of culture
Length: Short
Director: Nande Walters
Country: Jamaica

Nande explores memory, or lack thereof, during a recent trip to visit her grandparents in Kingston, Jamaica. As one of the first American-born children in her family, she reflects on occasional visits to the island through digitizing family photos and videotapes. From her father’s childhood home in the city of Kingston to her grandmother’s childhood home in the mountains of Negril, Nande follows their migrations of leaving home as young adults. Nande uses the camera to bridge 22 years of oceanic distance between her, her grandmother, and her ancestral land.

Skating 868

Genre: Educational
Length: Short
Director: Anya Leigh Aching
Country: Trinidad and Tobago

The skateboarding documentary takes an observational and interview style. The premise of my film is that not enough people are aware that there is a skateboarding culture in Trinidad and it is incredibly underfunded, more needs to be done in making safe places to skate and more needs to be done in making people, mainly kids feel safe and comfortable to come out and learn how to skateboard. The film looks at themes of resilience, local skaters don’t have a “nice” skatepark, they have an abandoned warehouse and the street so it shows dedication and the want for this sport/hobby as skaters use what is available to them. This film is all about showing that despite circumstances, the skateboarders of Trinidad will skate regardless.
