Evangeline

Genre: Animation
Length: Short
Director: Peter De Souza-Samanek
Country: Canada

Inspired by Trinidadian folklore and the haunting character of the Douen, this experimental short film follows a wire figurine named Evangeline—based on the artist’s goddaughter—as she finds herself lost in a mysterious forest. Rooted in wire-bending, a traditional Trinidadian art form associated with carnival, the film brings this local legend to life through a distinctly Caribbean lens. With an “if you know, you know” approach, the film intentionally leaves much unsaid. The story is meant to be understood immediately by Trinidadians and those who know of the folklore, while others may have to dig deeper to uncover the story alluded to within this piece.Evangeline finds herself lost in the forest and encounters a Douen.

Drowning in Silence

Genre: Expressions of culture
Length: Short
Director: Crystal Letren, Wayne Martin
Country: Trinidad and Tobago

Drowning in Silence is a hauntingly short dance film that explores the invisible journey of mental illness, how it builds in silence, hides behind joy, and spirals into despair when left unspoken. Through the visceral language of movement, this film follows a single dancer whose body becomes the canvas for the emotional highs and devastating lows of a life unravelling beneath the surface.

Fragmented

Genre: Expressions of culture
Length: Short
Director: Feguenson Hermongène
Country: Cuba, Haiti

In Bauta, a group of professional dancers revisit the history of the Afro-Cuban community through the mythical figure of Legba, the guardian of the roads, the mediating spirit between the world of humans and that of the gods. Originally from the kingdom of Dahomey, which crossed the Atlantic at the same time as African captives enslaved in the sugar cane fields of America, Legba will guide these bodies-machines, these racialized, dehumanized, disoriented bodies towards emancipation, while turning the Christian narrative on its head.
