Sandra Vivas

Films by this Director:

Born in Venezuela, Vivas is a Dominican artist who has been living on the island since 2009. Her art explores autobiographical narratives from a critical viewpoint, questioning societal norms that perpetuate the subordination, alienation, discrimination, and fetishization of women. She uses personal stories as a powerful act of resistance, emphasizing the political nature of the personal. In 2017, Vivas’s artistic path took a significant turn after Hurricane Maria. As she documented her experiences through writing and drawing, she unexpectedly discovered animation. Now, Vivas uses animation to reconstruct memories and re-elaborate trauma, facilitating both personal and collective healing. She has developed a distinctive animation style that combines drawing, painted paper cutouts, and traditional frame-by-frame techniques to vividly bring her personal stories to life. Her recent projects include a 2023 micro-biopic about her father, architect Fruto Vivas, and her 2024 children’s animated film, “The Hip Hops.” This film, inspired by her experiences as a disabled child, has received international acclaim at various film festivals
