Rethinking the gaze: subversion and sovereignty in Caribbean cinema PANEL

Saturday, September 27, 2025 | 9:30 am

The cinematic gaze is a powerful force that shapes narratives, constructs identities, and reinforces – or resists – dominant power structures. Whether patriarchal, colonial, or cultural, the gaze is never neutral. Curator Ivonne Cotorruelo joins filmmakers Wally Fall, Richard Fung, and Nayibe Tavares to examine how Caribbean film can unsettle inherited visual languages and assert new ways of seeing. What does it mean to take control of the lens? How can filmmakers use the camera to challenge exclusionary frameworks, centre historically overlooked perspectives, and affirm the agency of their participants? This 75-minute conversation  invites reflection on cinematic strategies grounded in care, complexity, and sovereignty – highlighting a Caribbean vision that insists on being seen, on its own terms.
