Santiago Álvarez was born on March 18, 1919 in Cuba as Santiago Alvarez Roman. He was a prolific Cuba filmmaker who wrote and directed many documentaries and short films about Cuba after the revolution. He developed a unique style of using found materials, including Hollywood clips, cations and photographs, and incorporating them into his innovative films. He was known for 79 primaveras (1969), Hanoi, Tuesday 13th (1968) and El sueño del pongo (1970). He died on May 20, 1998 in Havana, Cuba.
