A sewage worker is found dead inside a manhole in Mumbai. An elderly folk singer is arrested on a charge of inciting the worker to commit suicide. His trial is a ridiculous display of institutional incompetence, with endless delays, coached prosecution witnesses, and obsessive privileging of arcane colonial law over reason and mercy. This is a quietly devastating, absurdist portrait of injustice, caste prejudice and venal politics; rich with comedy and tragedy, complexity and contradiction.
