SUMMARY:Nocturnes/ special presentation
DESCRIPTION:A hushed marvel of observational cinema\, ‘Nocturnes’ invites viewers into the shadowy\, flickering world of moths in the Eastern Himalayas\, a remote ecological hotspot along the India-Bhutan border. With mesmeric micro-cinematography and an attuned sonic recording the film traces the nocturnal investigations of two observers drawn to the delicate grandeur of these often-overlooked creatures. ‘Nocturnes’ is more than a visual wonder; it is a poetic immersion into interconnection between species\, climates\, and rhythms too easily ignored. Not an ecological portrait but a sensory plea: to slow down\, to look closer\, and to find beauty where most fail to see it.

SUMMARY:Twice into oblivion
DESCRIPTION:Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Quisqueya and a hidden genocide. In 1937\, Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered the massacre of over 20\,000 Haitian immigrants living in the Dominican Republic. Daphné Ménard\, a Haitian theatre director\, brought together actors from both parts of the island to work on an unprecedented creative project\, demanding people from both sides summon up the darker realms of their histories.

SUMMARY:Everyday dignity: Philomena Essed
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago\, scholar Philomena Essed sparked fierce public debate with her groundbreaking book\, Everyday Racism. Once seen as controversial\, the work is now recognised as a foundational text in the fight against racism. In this intimate and timely documentary\, filmmaker Ida Does follows Essed’s enduring journey as a pioneer\, thinker\, and bridge-builder between generations. The film explores what it takes to speak out for decades as a Black female scholar in a resistant society. And asks how one sustains that mission with grace\, wisdom\, and integrity?

SUMMARY:Possible landscapes
DESCRIPTION:‘Possible landscapes’ is a poignant exploration of intergenerational experiences of Caribbean environments\, filmed across two seasons in Trinidad and Tobago. Across sugarcane fields\, steep hillsides\, on fishing boats and through dying coral reefs\, the film presents intimate portraits of people in their daily lives and examines the impacts of colonial legacies\, post-independence aspirations\, and the evolving forces of extractivism.  A collaboration between filmmaker Kannan Arunasalam and professors Tao DuFour (Architecture) and Natalie Melas (Comparative Literature)\, it emerges from the research project Possible Landscapes: Documenting Environmental Experience in Trinidad and Tobago. Combining documentary and academic enquiry\, it foregrounds lived experience of landscape and environment.

SUMMARY:Seeing through the lens: MASTERCLASS
DESCRIPTION:Spanning geographies and generations\, Richard Fung’s body of work navigates identity\, memory\, and belonging across Trinidad\, Toronto\, and beyond. From exploring his Moruga-born mother’s life through the lens of postcolonial migration\, to tracing the journey of dal puri from Canada to Bihar\, to documenting queer Asian communities in Toronto – Fung’s films ask how we negotiate space\, visibility\, and relation. His subjects include the falsely accused\, the displaced\, the diasporic\, and the everyday – always treated with nuance and care.  \nIn this intimate session\, Fung shares excerpts from both his experimental and documentary films\, offering insight into the aesthetic and conceptual choices that shape his practice. He reflects on how visual storytelling can give ‘minor’ stories space to be seen and heard\, and how formal strategies – such as hybridity\, voice\, and fragmentation – can deepen our understanding of relationality. Whether mapping transnational journeys or quiet domestic moments\, Fung’s work challenges dominant frames and invites us to rethink how film can witness\, connect\, and intervene. \n. \n🎫 THIS MASTERCLASS IS AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY PASS HOLDERS \n🔗 ALL ACCESS INDUSTRY PASSES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AT ISLAND eTICKETS \n🔗 26 SEPT. INDUSTRY DAY PASSES AVAILABLE AT ISLAND eTICKETS
