DESCRIPTION:With traditional distribution hard to crack\, YouTube can look like the open door for Caribbean filmmakers – the potential for instant reach\, a global audience\, and no gatekeepers. But is it the answer\, or simply one piece of a much bigger puzzle? Digital technology columnist Mark Lyndersay sits down with Baidawi Assing\, founder of the hugely successful channel EatAhFood\, alongside broadcasters and streamers\, to look honestly at where films actually find audiences and revenue. Beyond the hype of going viral\, the panel makes the case for television broadcast\, subscription streaming platforms\, and theatrical release as enduring\, viable routes to market\, each with its own economics\, audience\, and value to a filmmaker’s career. He writes features and between 2001 and 2016\, wrote 2\,000 editorial leaders for Guardian Media Limited publications. \nAs a photographer\, he has executed commercial assignments and annual report photography and personal projects over the last 48 years and his work has appeared in a range of publications\, from Caribbean Beat to GuardianUK the New York Times. He has taught photographers for more than 35 years\, beginning at John Donaldson Technical Institute in the 1980s. SUMMARY:TTFF Talk with Michèle Stephenson
DESCRIPTION:Her work is no stranger to TTFF – but this September marks Emmy-award-winning director Michèle Stephenson’s first time at the festival in person. Her documentary Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize\, was shortlisted for an Academy Award and named Best Documentary at TTFF/23. A filmmaker\, artist and writer of Haitian and Panamanian descent\, Michèle brings the eye of a former human rights attorney to some of the most urgent stories on screen today\, from American Promise to Stateless. Michele’s work is authentic and urgent\, and confronts hard-hitting realities to provoke thought\, inspire action\, and drive meaningful change. \nFor this year’s TTFF Talk\, Michele sits down with TTFF/26 programmer\, Farrah Rahaman\, for a wide-ranging conversation about storytelling\, craft and courage. \nMichele Stephenson\nEmmy Award–winning filmmaker\, artist\, and author\, Michèle Stephenson\, draws from her Haitian and Panamanian heritage to transform non-fiction storytelling. Through a Black Atlantic lens\, she reimagines narratives of resistance and healing\, weaving fiction\, immersive\, experimental\, and hybrid forms that center a Black Radical tradition and the lived experiences of the Black diaspora. Her non-fiction films Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project and Black Girls Play: The Story of Hand Games were both Oscar-shortlisted\, with Going To Mars winning the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking and Black Girls Play winning the Edward R. Murrow for Excellence in Video. Her other body of work includes The Changing Same\, a magical realist VR installation that premiered at Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier Showcase and won Tribeca’s Grand Jury Prize for Best Immersive Narrative\, along with several other projects recognized with Emmy nominations and a Canadian Screen Award nomination. Her newest work\, True North: A Movement in Five Parts\, is a creative non-fiction feature that explores the history of the Black liberation movement in Canada. She is a Guggenheim Artist Fellow\, Creative Capital Artist\, and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Clover® provides expert information on intellectual property rights and management to a wide array of persons including artists\, musicians\, performers\, film makers\, event promoters\, athletes and brands. Clover® is focused on raising intellectual property awareness and assisting entities to commercialise their intellectual property. Clover® is Making IP Accessible™. \nJustin is also a Tenured Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law\, University of the West Indies\, St Augustine. Prior to joining UWI\, Justin was a Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London and a Teaching Fellow at University College London (UCL).  \nJustin obtained his LLB from the University of Kent in 2011. He then completed his LLM in Intellectual Property Law at King’s College London in 2012. Following this\, he completed his PhD at King’s College London in 2016. Justin’s work has been cited by the Court of Justice of the European Union and in leading intellectual property textbooks and journal articles. \nJustin’s primary research interest is focused on copyright law. He is also interested in trade mark law\, sports law and entertainment law. Justin has also advised on and/or drafted copyright laws in the Caribbean region for St Lucia\, St Kitts and Nevis\, St Vincent as well as he drafted a Caribbean wide regulation on the management of collective management organisations that is being incrementally rolled out across the region.

SUMMARY:Using AI Intentionally: Freeing the Human\, Automating the Routine | Presentation
DESCRIPTION:AI poses a significant threat to the creative process of filmmaking. This interactive presentation with practical demonstrations\, discussion and Q&A will take a deep dive into the growing tension between technology and artistry and will seek to establish artificial intelligence as a supportive workflow and administrative instrument while explicitly advocating that that creative control and vision must remain in human hands. \n. \n Robert MacFarlane\nRobert Macfarlane is a filmmaker\, writer and director whose work spans narrative film\, commercial production and branded content. His award-winning short film Immune received nine international awards\, and he is currently developing his debut feature\, Sticks + Bones\, a Trinidad-set horror feature rooted in the tradition of Kalinda stick-fighting. \nRobert has been exploring and implementing AI and automation tools within filmmaking workflows since 2015\, with a particular interest in how emerging technology can remove repetitive and labour-intensive processes while preserving the human judgement at the centre of storytelling. He has undertaken dedicated training in artificial intelligence and its responsible and ethical implementation within film and creative practice.

DESCRIPTION:Behind every director’s vision stands an Assistant Director (AD) – the person who keeps the production running so the director can stay focused on the story. This session explores the AD as the logistical backbone of filmmaking: the role responsible for holding hundreds of moving parts in alignment\, from scheduling and call sheets to on-set coordination and momentum. More than a support function\, it is the discipline that makes a set work. Through practical tools\, tips\, and techniques\, participants will gain insight into how ADs think\, plan\, and lead under pressure – and why the role demands both rigorous organisation and calm\, decisive communication. For emerging professionals\, the AD track offers more than a way onto set; it is a clear and sustainable gateway to a lasting career in film production. (Image credit: Kevin Huggins) \n. \nSophie Walcott\nBorn and raised in Trinidad and Tobago\, Sophie Walcott graduated from the University of The West Indies with a Film Production and Film Studies Degree in 2018. Since then she has worked as an editor/producer on numerous corporate\, commercial and narrative projects. In 2017\, she edited her first feature project ‘Back to Freeport’; then in 2020 she edited and produced the award winning feature film\n‘Grace & Saleem’. Sophie has since participated in the DEENTAL in the Caribbean producers’ programme in the Dominican Republic\, was accepted through the UNESCO Transcultura to the EFM Toolbox Programme 2023 for emerging Producers\, and has a television project in development that was accepted into the DEENTAL series workshop for Series Mania in Lille\, France. \nOver the past five years\, Sophie has served as Assistant Director (AD) on large scale regional television commercials (TVCs)\, music videos\, non-fiction series and narrative projects (feature length and short form). She hopes to continue to develop\, produce and direct high quality\, artistically focused Trinbago films and television\, that help enrich her local industry\, and bring new cultural diverse stories into the international space.
