SUMMARY:Richard Fung: forty years of radical intimacy TTFF TALK
DESCRIPTION:In conversation with Farrah Rahaman \nRichard Fung has been a leading light in Caribbean cinema for over four decades. His works are enmeshments with desire\, identity\, migration and home. By way of recipes and food ways\, tender familial representations\, community rooted video production\, and moving image portraits of artists\, he addresses cultural retention and hybridity\, race and belonging\, and sexual orientation and all of their slippages. Never pigeon-holed into one subject matter\, his practice is defined by ethical rigor\, close relationships\, and a sensitivity that betrays the omniscient voice of God documentarian. As Fung’s final piece of advice to his LGBTQ studio class at the Ontario College of Art and Design he shared\,  “If I leave you with anything to move ahead it’s the importance of curiosity and criticality.” In this talk we hold the breadth of Fung’s career\, journeying through his experiences as a filmmaker\, writer\, teacher and organizer\, and what he has learnt from a life of asking questions and finding meaning through video and writing. \n🎫 THIS TTFF TALK IS AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY PASS HOLDERS \n🔗 ALL ACCESS INDUSTRY PASSES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AT ISLAND eTICKETS \n🔗 26 SEPT. SUMMARY:Rethinking the gaze: subversion and sovereignty in Caribbean cinema PANEL
DESCRIPTION:The cinematic gaze is a powerful force that shapes narratives\, constructs identities\, and reinforces – or resists – dominant power structures. Whether patriarchal\, colonial\, or cultural\, the gaze is never neutral. Curator Ivonne Cotorruelo joins filmmakers Wally Fall\, Richard Fung\, and Nayibe Tavares to examine how Caribbean film can unsettle inherited visual languages and assert new ways of seeing. What does it mean to take control of the lens? How can filmmakers use the camera to challenge exclusionary frameworks\, centre historically overlooked perspectives\, and affirm the agency of their participants? This 75-minute conversation  invites reflection on cinematic strategies grounded in care\, complexity\, and sovereignty – highlighting a Caribbean vision that insists on being seen\, on its own terms. \n \n🎫 THIS PANEL IS AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY PASS HOLDERS \n🔗 ALL ACCESS INDUSTRY PASSES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AT ISLAND eTICKETS \n🔗 27 SEPT. SUMMARY:Seeing through the lens: MASTERCLASS
DESCRIPTION:Spanning geographies and generations\, Richard Fung’s body of work navigates identity\, memory\, and belonging across Trinidad\, Toronto\, and beyond. From exploring his Moruga-born mother’s life through the lens of postcolonial migration\, to tracing the journey of dal puri from Canada to Bihar\, to documenting queer Asian communities in Toronto – Fung’s films ask how we negotiate space\, visibility\, and relation. His subjects include the falsely accused\, the displaced\, the diasporic\, and the everyday – always treated with nuance and care.  \nIn this intimate session\, Fung shares excerpts from both his experimental and documentary films\, offering insight into the aesthetic and conceptual choices that shape his practice. He reflects on how visual storytelling can give ‘minor’ stories space to be seen and heard\, and how formal strategies – such as hybridity\, voice\, and fragmentation – can deepen our understanding of relationality. Whether mapping transnational journeys or quiet domestic moments\, Fung’s work challenges dominant frames and invites us to rethink how film can witness\, connect\, and intervene. \n. \n🎫 THIS MASTERCLASS IS AVAILABLE TO INDUSTRY PASS HOLDERS \n🔗 ALL ACCESS INDUSTRY PASSES ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AT ISLAND eTICKETS \n🔗 26 SEPT.
